Difference between Eastern Coastal Plain and Western Coastal Plain

Indian Sub-continent is located in the southern part of the Asian Continent and it is surrounded by the Indian Ocean on three sides. India is a very extensive country and lies totally in the northern hemisphere of the globe.

COASTAL PLAINS

The plains that are situated on the coast are called Coastal Plains. India has a very vast coastal area and the Coastal Plains are divided into 2 types as follows,

  1. Eastern Coastal Plain
  2. Western Coastal Plain

EASTERN COASTAL PLAIN

The Eastern Coastal Plain lies between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal (which is situated in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent). The Eastern Coastal Plain is again sub-divided into 3 types, they are as follows, a) Utkal Coast b) Circar Coast C) Coromandel Coast

WESTERN COASTAL PLAIN

The Western Coastal Plain lies between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea (which is situated at the western part of the Indian sub-continent). The Western Coastal Plain is again sub-divided into 3 types, they are as follows,
a) Konkan Coast b) Canara Coast c) Malabar Coast.

Difference Between Eastern coastal plain and Western coastal plain:

Let’s briefly discuss the main differences between eastern coastal plain and western coastal plain that lies between eastern ghats and western ghats.

EASTERN COASTAL PLAIN WESTERN COASTAL PLAIN
Eastern Coastal Plain is located at the eastern part of India. Western Coastal Plain is located at the western part of India.
LIES BETWEEN
Eastern Coastal Plain lies between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal. Western Coastal Plain lies between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea.
SURFACE STRUCTURE
Eastern Coastal Plains are wide and have large surface structure. Western Coastal Plains are narrower than the Eastern Coastal Plains.
STRETCH
It stretches from Mahanadi in Odish to Cauvery delta in Tamil Nadu. It starts at the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat and ends at Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu.
LAND FERTILITY
The lands of Eastern Coastal Plains are very fertile. The lands of Western Coastal Plains are less fertile.
AGRICULTURE
The areas located in the Eastern Coastal Plains are agriculturally very well developed. The areas located in the Western Coastal Plains are agriculturally not not developed.
RIVERS
These plains are formed by rivers Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery. These plains are not acquainted with many rivers and they are also uneven and broken by hill terrain.
LAKES
The important lakes of Eastern Coastal Plain are Lake Chilka in Odisha and Kolleru and Pulicat in Andhra Pradesh. There are no lakes present in the Western Coastal Plains.
DIVIDED INTO
These plains can be divided into 3 parts, Utkal Coast, Circar Coast and Coramandal Coast. These plains can be divided into 3 parts, Konkan Coast, Canara Coast and Malabar Coast.

CONCLUSION

The above-mentioned differences between the Eastern coastal plain and western coastal plain are mainly about the Coastal Plains of India and like Plains, there are Ghats (the Eastern Ghats and the Western Ghats) in India.
