Difference Between LCD and LED

The difference between LCD and LED plays a giant role for people once they consider purchasing gadgets. Furthermore, many brands use the LCD vs LED factor to good use when marketing their products. Technically speaking, both LCD and LED televisions happen to be liquid crystal displays.

Difference Between LCD and LED

What is LCD?

A liquid crystal display or LCD refers to a mixture of the solid state of matter and also the liquid state to provide a display effect. LCD uses a liquid crystal to cause the formation of a visual image. Liquid crystal displays screens that implement a super-thin technology display technology.

Liquid crystal display(LCD) has several layers that have electrodes and two polarized panel filters. Furthermore, the utilization of LCD technology takes place for displaying the image in electronic devices like computers, etc. Moreover, the projection of light is from a lens on a layer of liquid crystal.

The combination of a grayscale image with color light ends up in the formation of the color image. Afterward, the display of such a picture takes place on the screen. An LCD is formed from a passive display grid or a vigorous matrix display grid. The LCD smartphones include the active-matrix display.

The liquid crystal display (LCD) screen works by blocking light rather than emitting light. Moreover, LCD needs a backlight because it cannot emit light. Furthermore, LCDs are quickly replacing the cathode ray tube. This is often because; cathode ray tube uses more energy as compared to LCDs, besides being heavier.

Advantage:

  1. It consumes less power.
  2. It includes millions of color.
  3. It is lighter than LED.

Disadvantage:

  1. It needs extra light sources.
  2. It have also restricted viewing angle.
  3. Its speed is very slow.

What is LED?

A light-emitting diode (LED) refers to a semiconductor device that emits light when the passing of electrical current takes place through it. Furthermore, the assembly of light in LED happens when current-carrying particles combine together within the semiconductor material. Moreover, one can describe LED as a solid-state device because the generation of light takes place within the solid semiconductor material.

The LED can be a PN-junction diode that tends to emit light when the passing of electrical current takes place through it in a very forward direction. Furthermore, a charge carrier recombination happens in LED.

A combination of electrons belonging to the N-side and P-side takes place in LED. Due to this, the formation of energy takes place within the style of heat and light. The LED comprises semiconductor material that is certainly colorless, and therefore the radiation of light happens through the diode’s junction.

Extensive use of LEDs takes place in segmental matrix displays, yet as matrix displays, of numeric character and alphanumeric character. Moreover, experts use LED for single line segment while for creating the mathematical notation single.

Advantage:

  1. LED has a very long life.
  2. It requires low maintenance.
  3. LED doesn’t produce heat.
  4. LED is highly efficient.

Disadvantage:

  1. It is more costly.
  2. It have restricted viewing angle.

Difference Between LCD and LED

The LED uses gallium arsenides which when heated emits light whereas LCD uses liquid crystals which are energized and provides light. The switching time of the LED is less as compared to LCD. The switching time is the active and deactivated time of their display. The direct current reduces the lifespan of LCD whereas the LED has no effect on it.

LCD LED
Power Consumption
LCD consumes lesser power than LED LED consumes more power than LCD
Response Time
LCD is slower in comparison to LED when it comes to response time LED is better than LCD when it comes to response time
Picture Quality
LCD has good picture quality but not as good as LED LED offers superior picture quality
Cost
Generally less costly Generally more costly
Colour Accuracy
LCD has good color quality but it is certainly below the level of LED Offers more enhanced color quality
Black Level
LCD has an inferior black level in comparison to LED LED certainly have a better black level
Viewing angle
The wide-angle in LCD decreases by 30 degrees from the center LED has a viewing angle that is wider than LCD

Conclusion

The LED and LCD both are modern technologies. But LED has more advantages than LCD and hence it is mostly used for making displays. The LED consumes more power as compared to LCD because of the plasma. The filament used in LCD is made up of plasma, which requires less power for activation. The display area of the LED is less as compared to the LCD because LED use a PN-junction diode which displays light only in one direction, whereas, the LCD display lights in all directions.
