Back then people used different sources like fire, kerosene lamps, etc for their lighting needs. In the late 19th century bulbs came into existence and world adopted it very rapidly from then on constant innovation and improvements are being carried on by many organizations to develop various bulbs which come with added advantages like more light, more durable, less heat, less power consumption, etc.
There are various types of bulbs according to their functioning and out of them more popular bulbs are Incandescent bulbs, CFL bulbs and LED bulbs. This article concentrates on differentiating the LED and CFL bulbs.
LED (Light Emitting Diodes)
LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are solid light bulbs which are highly energy-efficient. When first developed, LEDs were limited to single-bulb use in applications such as electronics, pen lights, etc.
CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamp)
A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) is a fluorescent lamp designed to replace an incandescent light bulb. The lamps use a tube which is curved or folded to fit into the space of an incandescent bulb.
Let us see some of the differences between LED bulbs and CFL bulbs in the table given below.
|LED BULBS||CFL BULBS|
|LED light bulbs produce light when an electrical current passes through them.||In CFL bulbs an electric current flows between electrodes at each end of a gas-filled tube. The reaction creates ultraviolet light and heat, which is then changed into light.|
|LEDs, use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs.||CFLs use 25-35% less energy than incandescent bulbs.|
|LEDs emit very little heat when compared to CFL bulbs.||CFLs release about 80% of their energy as heat.|
|LEDs have a lifetime up to 40,000 hours.||CFLs have only up to 10,000 hours of lifetime.|
|Because of the lower energy consumption by the LED bulbs, the carbon dioxide emissions are very low.||CFL bulbs use more energy when compared to LEDs and they emit more carbon dioxide in to the environment.|
|The heat emitted by the LED bulbs is very low (3 BTU's per hour) ** BTU- British Thermal Units.||The heat emitted by the CFL bulbs is (30 BTU's per hour)|
|Impact on Environment|
|LED's helps reduce greenhouse gasses by consuming less energy and results in lower electric bills.||CFL's contains 1 to 5mg of Mercury and is a major risk to the environment.|
|Very Durable, LEDs can handle vibrations and bumping.||Not Very Durable, the glass of CFL bulb is fragile and can easily break.|
